Can you travel in South Korea with just Wifi?

Sunday, 14 January 2018

You probably know that South Korea has the fastest internet and that their Wifi connection in cities is amazing (people probably say this about Seoul)!
Well... I lived in Busan, the second biggest city of Korea and the short answer is - no (although i did it for a year to save money but sometimes it was a damn struggle).

Why? You need a SIM card from one of the Korean mobile service providers for the wifi to work. Most of the time the wifi connection is only available if you use certain mobile service providers like SKT and and KT. If you're coming to Korea for travel, you might want to look into pre-paid SIM card or pre-paid Wifi card to make your travels easier, especially if you are planning to travel outside of bigger cities or if you cannot read Korean. I stayed in Korea for a year and didn't know that you could actually get connection that wasn't like 50$ a month. But well... I survived heh Basically it all comes down to how long you are staying.
After a quick search online it seems like around 25$ is the cheapest for 1GB. Remember that if you do get the sim card, you can also access wifi so I don't think you will need a lot of data but the same site also offers 2GB for 40$ and unlimited for 60$ (a month).

By the way, you can learn to read Korean in less than a day. Just saying in case you want to but it looks too difficult. You can do it on your flight to Seoul. ;)

But what if you're trying to be cheap like me? Where to get actually free wifi for everyone?
  • Subway stations (not subways!!!). Yes, Korea does have wifi on subways but that's if you have a Korean SIM card. Subway stations do have free wifi, you just have to connect to it and wait few seconds as the ads play.
  • If you're coming to Korea as an exchange student, you probably will get an ID and password that you can use while on campus.
  • Most cafes if not all have wifi. Koreans love studying in cafes and i have never been to one where wifi wasn't available. A lot of restaurants will have it too. Sometimes you have to ask for it if it is not written somewhere and the waiter will give you the password. :)
  • This an obvious one but do research while you're in your hotel/hostel or whatever floats your boat. Screenshots, screenshots, screenshots... And of course there is the good old way of asking people.
The situation might be change because of 2018 Winter Olympics. Also remember that i've only spent around a week in Seoul and if i said something that's completely off, tell me :)
